OWASP API Security: Common Failure Points in Production APIs

A deep dive into Broken Object Level Authorization (BOLA), mass assignment, and unvalidated parameters in modern REST and GraphQL APIs — and how to prevent them.

By Studio dev Security & VAPT Team

APIs now power almost all modern web and mobile applications. Unfortunately, standard network firewalls and HTTPS transport encryption do nothing to prevent logical authorization flaws that allow unauthorized data extraction.

1. Broken Object Level Authorization (BOLA / IDOR)

BOLA remains the number one vulnerability on the OWASP API Security Top 10. It occurs when an endpoint accepts an identifier (such as /api/projects/8492) and returns the record without verifying that the requesting user or tenant actually owns that resource.

The fix is architectural: object authorization checks must never rely on client-provided IDs alone. Queries must always filter implicitly by the authenticated session context (e.g., WHERE id = :id AND tenant_id = :session_tenant_id).

2. Mass Assignment & Unfiltered Object Updates

Mass assignment happens when backend frameworks automatically bind client JSON directly into database ORM models (such as User.update(req.body)). An attacker can pass additional fields like is_admin: true or role: "superuser" to escalate privileges.

Enforcing strict Data Transfer Object (DTO) validation schemas using Zod, Pydantic, or Joi ensures that only explicitly permitted fields are deserialized.

3. Lack of Rate Limiting & Resource Quotas

Authentication endpoints, password resets, SMS dispatch routes, and expensive report generators must always have sliding-window token-bucket rate limits implemented at the API Gateway or reverse proxy level.

Practical Engineering Takeaways

  • ✓Always enforce object ownership verification within database queries, not in frontend state.
  • ✓Use strict DTOs / whitelist validation schemas to prevent mass assignment.
  • ✓Apply sliding-window rate limiting per IP and authenticated user token.
  • ✓Conduct automated and manual VAPT scans prior to production release.
